From punk into pop (via hardcore): Re-reading the <i>Sub Pop</i> manifesto

Bruce Pavitt’s music fanzine Sub Pop , the first issue of which appeared in 1980, is often presented as a simple case independent culture versus reviled mainstream, with little reference to actual written and graphic content its pages. This article challenges complicates that view an account usage language specific genre terms – particular, his tendency rebrand punk (indie) ‘pop’. he reinforces all manner visual references 1950s pre-corporate means production consumption. In so doing, I argue, projects what numerous theorists have defined ‘genre culture’ based around pop. Pavitt also tries, however, absorb immediate indie legacy hardcore within culture.
